In addition to his work as a massage therapist, Joey is also a piano recitalist. He was a semifinalist in the 2000 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, Texas. The only massage therapist in the competition, he received extensive media coverage: radio, TV, and newspapers in Athens, Atlanta, and Fort Worth. He was also featured in the March-April 2001 issue of Massage Magazine, a national publication for massage professionals.
With a deep affinity for the music of the Romantic Era, he was cited by The Macon Telegraph for an "emotionally riveting" performance of the Sonata in b minor by Franz Liszt. Joey holds three degrees in music from the University of Georgia, where he studied piano with Despy Karlas. He has performed solo recitals throughout Georgia and has performed a violin/piano recital with Richard Burgin, former long-time concertmaster of the Boston Symphony. While at the University of Georgia, Joey won the Concerto Contests as well as the Georgia Music Teachers College audition.
